Somehow, there is a common tendency to overindulge once the ‘health-seal’ has been broken. Do you sometimes eat very healthfully, you are on a roll, you are doing everything right and then, here it is, the amazing decadent chocolate fudge cupcake, staring at you with its sumptuous icing, working all inches of your willpower until you finally give in and buy it. You run to your car and eat it quickly before anyone can see you and you are not even finished enjoying yourself when the guilt has already started to eat you alive. You know that cupcakes are unhealthy, and you now think that your whole day, or week, of healthy choices just went to waste.

WHAT YOU HEAR
You think of yourself as a loser, and you are really down on yourself for your lack of willpower. You keep saying to yourself: “Well, of course, I bought the cupcake, I am very weak”. “I have a sweet tooth, what can you do?” “Now my whole day is a wreck. I might as well eat another one right now and also have a burger and fries for dinner.” And more likely, you will also have dessert for dinner too because your day is screwed up anyways.

WHAT YOU DO
You proceed to go back in and buy another cupcake, or you stop at the coffee shop drive through to get a doughnut, or at the gas station to buy a chocolate bar and a tub of ice cream for dessert. If you’re going to ‘fail’ your day, you want to do it big!

WHAT IT IS LIKE
This whole scenario is like stomping on your phone because you accidentally dropped it and made a little scratch on the screen. Your phone is perfectly fine. The scratch is actually barely perceptible. And yet, as you see what you have done in dropping your phone, you would put it back on the floor and start stomping on it to ‘finish it off’.

WHAT TO SAY INSTEAD
Stop the bleeding. When eating something you should not have or doing the reverse of what you know you should be doing, like sitting on the couch instead of going for your workout, we tend to be really hard on ourselves. This sends negative messages to our personal assistant (see section one on how your personal assistant can work on your side). You want to immediately say things like: “Hmm, this tastes great, and I know it is not so healthy for me, so that is why I very rarely eat this.” “This is a ‘one-off’” “I am usually awesome at making great choices” “I always eat very healthy” “I will catch up for the rest of the day and make sure I have proper nutrition from now on.” “This was actually tasting pretty off, especially from the second bite on.” “I enjoy healthy food much better than this.”
