Following a Nutrition Seminar that I gave to the staff at Steve Nash Fitness Clubs, I realized how most people know what’s good and what’s bad for you. The main question is not WHAT to eat, it is WHEN to eat. The tip of the week this week in my Zumba classes has been about when to eat around our workouts to make them more results-full!

BEFORE your workout, you need to eat at least 2 hours prior a cardio workout and 1 hour prior a strength training workout. If you workout at 6am, drink a shake and avoid solid food, but still do, show up for your workout with something in your stomach.
DURING your workout, drink water. If your workout is more than 90 minutes, think about adding electrolyte drink like coconut water who contains natural ones. If you don’t feed yourself before you exercise, your body will not let you squeeze your muscles properly and will not let you burn calories. If you  don’t eat it, you steal it from your body.

AFTER your workout, you have half an hour to eat some carbs and you have 2 hours to eat protein. Make sure to do so after your workout to prepare your body for your next workout.

In my book When You’re Hungry You Gotta Eat, there is a full chapter on food and exercise. Enjoy!
