What do you do when you drop a ball? What are the three things to do when you make a mistake?Watch the video or keep reading to find out.

Last week we had a special Halloween blog where we wondered if Halloween was the only day of the year when people were putting a mask on. If you missed that blog on How to Be Yourself, you can go here to read it. Now back to our mistakes.

Oops. Have you ever dropped a ball? More likely you have, because we are all human beings and it happens to all of us. What do you do when you drop the ball?

Very quickly you get this huge sense of guilt, right? Even when it's something that just feels like it happened TO you, but you feel you should have seen this coming! You know that you totally dropped the ball! Maybe you missed an appointment, or there were so many tasks on your to-do list that you completely forgot about an client and you dropped the ball.

So, what do you do when it happens? Here are three strategies:

First strategy: You repeat to yourself that it's done.

"Oops, it's done!"

You are human. Instead of going into the: "I should have done this, I should have done that. Oh my gosh, I'm such a loser. I'm so bad, I can't be relied upon" - and you know how sometimes you can go into this huge negative self-talk and start trash talking yourself -  instead, you can say: "Oops, I dropped one." Just acknowledge that it is normal.

Second strategy: Look for your learning. What have you learned from this? Did your calendar erase it by magic or did you do something to erase the meeting from your calendar? What actually happened? How can you make sure it doesn't happen again in the future? What are you learning from this? And what could you have done differently? In strategy number one: you accept it: "Okay, I've made a mistake!" Strategy number two: Tell yourself: "This outcome is the price that I had to pay for this learning." So, what have you learned that will now serve you for the rest of your life?

And the third strategy: The most powerful fact about mistakes is to know that BALLS BOUNCE BACK!  Isn't it convenient? When you drop a ball, you can catch it on the way back up. Figure out a strategy about how are you going to catch it on the way back up. What will you do about it? Because if you drop a ball, it's fine. There's always another time where you will be able to fix that or catch it on the way back.

Make a plan and ask yourself: "How am I gonna fix this? How am I going to make sure that this doesn't happen again? Because now I have my learning about this specific ball that I just dropped. What can I do about it?" What is done is done. But you can fix it. You can apologize. You can make a plan. Tell people: "I am human. I am very sorry. I totally dropped the ball. I apologize. How can I fix this?" Ask the person involved as well if they have solution on how you could fix it: "How can I make it up to you? I'm really sorry. So tell me what is it gonna take?" Be patient and then find out how you can fix it on the way up because balls do bounce back up.
