Have you seen the show Yellowstone? So many lessons from the Dutton Ranch. I've watched all the episodes, and every time, I keep thinking about our reality. Of course, it's completely different, but there are still some pretty good lessons to be learned...
The Duttons aren't good people, but we get attached to them. They commit crimes, they manipulate the local government, they get rid of people who threaten the existence of their ranch, and yet somehow, they're protecting what they've built. They're protecting what is worth having, and it's an amazing series full of real life situations, of existing catastrophes and of injustices that were lived back in the days and alas, still today.
The first quote that I want to bring up is from John Dutton.
Isn't that true? Whatever it is that we do, there's always one person that will try to take it from us, that will be jealous and that will try to bring us down. Whenever you are succeeding, you feel on top of the world and you've done something great, someone might, because of their own insecurities, try and take this win. It is a constant in life.
Another quote I like is from Rip.
I actually had to Google this! I know what a shark looks like, but I didn't know what a minnow looked like. It looks like this, by the way.
Somehow, this quote from Rip talks about character. In this scene, Rip was addressing Jimmy (poor Jimmy). Rip is one of my favorites, because he is so trustful and loyal to the Dutton family. John Dutton found him when he was a kid. He was hiding in the barn, he was taken as a farm hand, and he kind of became part of the family regardless of their feelings for him. He was not always well treated, but he will do anything that is being asked of him. You can still be loyal, even if sometimes at work, for example, you don't feel like you want to give your 100%, or you don't necessarily feel appreciated for what you do.
John Dutton talks about Beth, he talks about his children and he says:
His first son passed away right at the beginning of the series. That's the one he misses. The one that he regrets, of course, Jamie, that keeps getting betraying him and going against him over and over, and is kind of always in the way of what John is trying to do. John has been betrayed so many times by Jamie. He says also: "One I pity." So, the one he pities in that episode is Kayce, because Kayce just lost one of his sons.
The one he envies is Beth, of course. Beth is free. She does not care. She does whatever she wants. She's one of those really, really powerful, careless and intelligent women, and yet so bad! There are so many bad things about this series, and yet we get attached to these characters, right?
Sometimes, when you feel like you cannot express yourself, when you feel like you aren't speaking up, you could think about what Beth would do. Maybe that's going to give you a little boost... Without going overboard like she does, of course! Maybe keep it within the realm of what is acceptable. I'm just saying that we can all use a little bit more Beth in our life, I guess.
The next lesson from Beth.
We learn later on the season why Beth is the way she is, and why she's angry. She's suffered a lot of losses in her life... And that's all I'll say! The decisions she made were based on fear, and they cost her everything. Let's make sure that the decisions we make are not based on emotion. They must be made from your knowledge, expertise, when you are at your best. That's what I do. I help people get rid of the panic button, remove the emotions so that they're not blurred by them when they make decisions, because decisions can be expensive if you don't make the right one.
Another lesson from Beth. She says:
You could see hell, or you could see heaven in this life, and it's true that we are facing very hard truths in that series. Lots of injustices, like Monica and Kayce, for example. That created some friction just because of the differences between those who were there before. It's all true. Even today, there are still a lot of problems with reservations, women disappearing, social injustices...
Next, John Dutton says:
The same thing goes for everything that's worth having. If it was easy, everyone would do it. The next time you feel a little tired or like you want to give up, just remember that. Sometimes, it's worth putting in the extra effort because after that, you feel so much better. Remember when Jimmy spent the whole night practicing his rope maneuvers? There are so many examples of determination and perseverance.
Finally, one of my favorite quotes is when the governor might be impeached, and the reporters all want to talk about it, but he says:
Choose to focus on the things that really matter and that will still be there tomorrow, on the problems that really need to be solved, those that are on top of the list instead of getting sidetracked with a lot of things that don't even matter.
Thank you so much, Yellowstone, for so many lessons. I could write and write for hours about this show, yet I am not even sure who's right and who's wrong! I think everything's kind of wrong about this show, and yet, we get really attached to the characters and we learn so much from them. Of course, at the end of the day, it is a TV show, so let's not take it too seriously, but just let's pull some lessons from it.
