This week, I was trying to plan my year. I usually set up targets, objectives, make a budget for what are going to be my marketing expenses, find ideas for what am I going to do on my social media platforms… But honestly, there are so many pieces of information that are missing that it’s not that easy this year, is it? There’s also a lot of fear: \u00ab\u00a0What am I going to do next? How am I going to deal with this unknown?\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n
Let me share a tip that I’ve learned while ordering takeout. We’re going to talk about cheese. I know, right?! I was at that takeout restaurant last week, waiting for my order to be ready, when a guy came to the window and asked: \u00ab\u00a0What is the OPA bowl?\u00a0\u00bb The nice lady answered and told him that the bowl he was asking about was served with halloumi cheese. The customer then said: \u00ab\u00a0Oh, what’s that? Halloumi cheese?\u00a0\u00bb The cashier answered: \u00ab\u00a0Well, it’s a cheese that you cook and you grill before eating, and then we add it on top of the bowl.\u00a0\u00bb The guy then backtracked and said: \u00ab\u00a0Oh, well, I don’t know about that. I’ve never heard of it. Don’t worry about it. I’m just going to revert to my normal bowl that I usually order and I’ll play it safe.\u00a0\u00bb Not missing a beat, the lady told him: \u00ab\u00a0Well, if you’ve never tasted it before, how do you know that this is not the next best thing ever? Maybe it’s going to become your favorite meal. Maybe it’s going to become your favorite food. You have never tasted it yet.\u00a0\u00bb So, she grilled a sample for him. He tasted it and he immediately lit up: \u00ab\u00a0Oh my gosh, this stuff is so good! Yes! Add it!\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n

Yes, of course, she was an amazing salesperson. She had just upsold him into a bowl that was maybe more expensive than the \u201csafe\u201d one that he always ordered, and he loved it. The lesson here is not in the up-sale. It’s not even on customer service, because we could do a whole blog about customer service, on how letting your clients try it first so that they love it, and then order it, is a great sale strategy. Kind of like when we give free consultations, free products or free downloads. There are so many lessons in that small little story that we could get today.<\/p>\n
My message here is about the unknown. How do we know that this new thing that we’re going to face won\u2019t be the best year yet? We don\u2019t know what\u2019s coming, we\u2019re in the\u00a0Unknown Zone.<\/em> We’re making it up and because we’re making it up to be bad, it has more chances to be, indeed, bad! If we’re making it up anyway, we might as well make up something that is going to be amazing, correct? If you are making something great up, that means that you are opening yourself to \u201ctasting the new thing.\u201d You’re opening yourself to new skills.<\/p>\n I don’t know if you’ve ever tasted raw halloumi cheese\u2026 It\u2019s not so good. You kind of have to work with it. You have to grill it in order to really get the full ROI, the full Return On Investment. Maybe there are some skills that you have yet to acquire. What are these skills? What are the things that you may not be really great at YET? Potentially, when you learn these few things that you need to learn, the outcome is going to be the best dish ever, the best year ever.<\/p>\n Think of the lady at the takeout counter that said: \u00ab\u00a0How do you know this is not going to be the best thing yet?\u00a0\u00bb We don’t know what 2021 has in store for us. We don’t know, but it could potentially be an amazing dish.
